Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program

Children at Long's Shotokan Karate Academy are learning the life saving message of the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program.  The Eddie Eagle program is an award winning program designed for children and being presented the month of October culminating with a Graduation Presentation and party on October 27th, 2008. There have been three graduating classes: Long's Shotokan Karate, Spring Branch Elementary Karate Program and the Grain Valley Community Center Karate Program. The Jackson Country Sheriff's Department has endorsed The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program being presented as a community service.  We are the first school in the area to offer this live saving educational program.

Our Eddie Eagle Graduation was a great success thanks to all that participated and made this happen.  Thanks to the Jackson Country Sherrif's Department for coming out and supporting us. Special thanks to Marlen Roszell for introducing us to the program and incorporating it.
Thanks to Eddie Eagle for flying in and congratulating the kids on a job well done!

The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program teaches children four important steps to take if they find a gun.  These steps are presented in an easy to remember format consisting of the the following simple rules:

STOP!  DON'T TOUCH.  LEAVE THE AREA.  TELL AN ADULT!

Accidental deaths with firearms have been decreasing for decades and are now at an all time low among the US population.  Gun accident prevention programs are widely considered to be a major reason for the decline.  Studies from the National Center for Health Statistics indicates a more than 80 percent drop in fatal firearm accidents among children in the Eddie Eagle age range since the nation wide Eddie Eagle Program was launched.

Since its launch the program has reached over 21 million children nationwide.  It has been endorsed by the National Sheriffs' Association and recognized by the Association of American Educators.  It is a recipient of The American Legion's National Education Award, and has been praised by a host of national and community organizations governors and state legislatures for its effectiveness.

This program instills in our youth the important values of leadership, discipline, and personal responsibility that help our children throughout their lives.  It is imperative that we be responsible for teaching good judgment and gun safety to children.

We would like to encourage you to participate in heightening gun safety awareness within our community.  Anyone interested in learning more about the first Eddie Eagle Program being offered in this area can contact Mark Long at 816-257-6933 or 816-260-8252.
